We spend so much of our lives rushing – multitasking, planning, thinking ahead. Even when we think we’re taking a break, we’re often still scrolling, half-working, or letting our minds race ahead to what’s next. But what if, just for five minutes, you did nothing?
Not in a structured, intentional, “I must relax now” kind of way. Not as a mindfulness exercise where you need to sit just right, breathe a certain way, or prepare yourself to be calm. Just sitting. Just stopping. No expectation other than that.
Set a timer for five minutes. That’s it. Just sit.
At first, it might feel pointless – your mind will want to fill the space. You might feel the urge to check your phone, fidget, or get up and do something. But if you stay, something interesting happens. You start to notice things – your thoughts, the sounds around you, the way your body feels. Your nervous system gets a rare moment to settle. The world doesn’t demand anything from you for five whole minutes, and you don’t have to demand anything from yourself either.
You might find that afterward, you feel a little clearer, a little less tangled up. Maybe not. But over time, this tiny pause can build into something powerful. It can give your mind space to breathe, create a little distance from the chaos, and remind you that you’re allowed to just be.
The only thing to do is to book an appointment with yourself, show up, and sit. No need to feel prepared, no need to make it a habit – just see what happens.
So, will you try it? Set a timer for five minutes today and see for yourself.
Let me know in the comments what you notice. Or don’t notice. Both are interesting.
