Every year in the UK 30,000 people experience a cardiac arrest with 80% of those experiencing a cardiac arrest in the home. This means it could be family members or friends, and if we don’t act quickly enough, they could die within minutes.

Many deaths could be prevented if first aid was given before emergency services arrive.

What is CPR?

CPR, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation, is a life-saving medical procedure that is given to someone who is in cardiac arrest. It helps to pump blood around the person’s body when their heart can’t.

CPR should only be used if someone is:

  • unconscious and not breathing
  • unconscious and not breathing normally

By performing chest compressions and rescue breaths, you are taking over the role of their heart and lungs, pumping blood and oxygen around their body.

Every second counts.

We might not always have our first aid kit on us, but one thing that we usually have to hand is our keys. This keyring contains a face shield with one-way valve, so that first aiders always have something to hand if they need to perform rescue breaths.
