Youth Mental Health Training

Our mission is simple, we create superheroes on standby! We are working with MHFA England to help turn 1 in 10 people in the UK into Mental Health Heroes.

Record levels of young people are struggling. Did you know suicide is the leading cause of death for those aged 5-19?

Academic pressure, social media, bullying, poverty, lack of availability of professional mental health support – all have been named by various sources as contributing to this epidemic of poor mental health in our young people. It’s clear that young people are not getting the support they need. Key figures in a young person’s life – parents, family members, teachers, tutors, carers, youth workers – can often spot when a young person is struggling but may not know how best to help.

We are adapting all our courses to make them safe for you and our staff during the Coronavirus outbreak. To see the latest Covid-19 updates click here.

Feel Empowered!

We aim to give you the information and skills to look after your own mental health so that you can set an example for young people.

By giving you the tools to have these conversations, we hope to empower you to create a mentally healthy, supportive environment in your family, school, peer group or community.

SkillBase First Aid Bespoke courses, sessions and talks can also be arranged for organisations looking at specific topics to be covered as part of their wellbeing strategy, and/or to support their existing Youth Mental Health First Aider’s in work. Learn more here

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid, or MHFA is an internationally recognised training course, which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need. In doing so, you can speed up a young person’s recovery and stop a mental health issue from getting worse. See details of course content here

We don’t train people to become therapists, we teach people to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and to potentially stop a crisis from happening.

Just like physical first aid, MHFA training is focused on an action plan that aims to preserve life, prevent further harm, and promote recovery, through practical skills that can be used every day.

According to the World Federation for Mental Health, “Employees favour a workplace that cares for their wellbeing and demonstrates support for wellbeing through a healthy work/life balance and strong diversity policies” (2017: Mental Health in the Workplace)

A Mental Health First Aider’s Story

“How to summarise the last couple of days? I have been on a journey of huge proportions. Gaining insight to the deepest parts of some ‘regular’ and ‘ordinary’ people; expanding my knowledge and avid interest in the subject of mental health; expressing myself in an incredibly candid and cathartic manner… I wholeheartedly underestimated the impact the Mental Health First Aid course could have on me. My faith in humanity, and the generosity in spirit of strangers, has taken a leap of restoration. I could not be more moved or grateful. And I implore anyone and everyone to take advantage of this life changing journey to enlightenment, courtesy of SkillBase First Aid.”
